War Museum

Today we went to the War Museum in Siem Reap, which contains remnants of the struggle which endured from 1979 until 1991. The People’s Republic of Kampuchea, established after the Khmer Rouge were dispelled by the Vietnamese army, continued to fight the Khmer Rouge after they retreated to the Thai border under the ongoing leadership of Pol Pot.

This civil war displaced 600,000 Cambodians, and played into the hands of the United States, China and the Soviet Union, who helped to arm and fund one side or another.  Peace efforts began in 1989 however, and a comprehensive settlement was reached in 1991.
