Change for good?

One of our fellow guests was commissioned to study a reform project in India over twenty years ago.

The project encouraged villagers to use gas stoves as an alternative to wood fires.  Firewood was in increasingly short supply and the women of the village were having to travel long distances to collect it.  The continued use of firewood was also seen as potentially damaging to the environment.

Adoption of the stoves was slow because the villagers had to pay for the gas whereas the firewood had been free. But after considerable effort the villagers were persuaded to give them a try. Women were able to spend more time at home. Domestic violence, including burnings, rose accordingly.

Make of that what you will.
